Nebraska launches conservation mentorship network for farmers

By Scout Nelson

To strengthen sustainable farming and ranching methods, the Center for Rural Affairs in Nebraska has unveiled its Conservation Mentorship Network. This innovative program is designed to facilitate peer-to-peer education among agricultural producers, with a focus on increasing the adoption of conservation practices throughout the state.

Kalee Olson, a senior policy associate with the center, emphasizes the value of producer-to-producer communication, particularly in adopting new agricultural methods. Recognizing that peer advice is highly trusted, this mentorship program seeks to leverage this dynamic for the benefit of environmental conservation.

Eligibility for the program extends to all Nebraska-based farmers and ranchers, irrespective of their experience level or the size of their operations. While experience in conservation cost-share programs is an asset, it is not mandatory. Mentees' enthusiasm for integrating conservation practices into their farming or ranching operations is essential.

The matching of mentors and mentees will be carefully curated, considering factors such as location, type, and size of the operation, as well as specific conservation objectives.  This tailored approach ensures that the guidance provided is relevant to each mentee's unique agricultural environment, which can vary significantly across Nebraska.

Olson stresses the goal of the program: uniting producers to adopt practices beneficial for soil health, water quality, and overall profitability. This initiative, supported by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, General Mills, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, represents a significant step towards sustainable agricultural practices in Nebraska.

For more information or to participate, farmers and ranchers are encouraged to contact Kalee Olson at the Center for Rural Affairs via email at kaleeo@cfra.org
