The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) has partnered with Omaha Public Schools (OPS) to provide high school students with insights into agriculture and natural resource careers.
Through East Campus visits, students are gaining hands-on experiences and learning about the diverse career options available in the agricultural sector.
Between October and November, over 600 OPS students visited East Campus, with an additional 600 scheduled to visit in January and March. These visits involve five OPS high schools and are part of a broader effort to enhance career awareness.
Students participate in interactive sessions on topics such as animal biology, food science, soil analysis, veterinary science, entrepreneurship, and forensic science. "Students are engaging in hands-on activities and experiencing a college tour,” said Jane Luethge, OPS teaching and learning consultant. This initiative aligns with OPS’s commitment to providing college visits for all freshmen.
The goal is to inspire future problem-solvers and innovators in food, energy, water, and social systems. CASNR Dean Tiffany Heng-Moss emphasized the importance of preparing students for careers in modern agriculture, which offers more than 300 career paths, including roles like lab technician, precision ag technologist, business analyst, and meteorologist.
Sponsors like Farm Credit Services, the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation, and other ag-related organizations support this initiative, which highlights the critical role of agriculture in daily life. CASNR coordinators note that these visits not only introduce students to the field but also help them envision their future on campus.
This collaboration underscores the significant impact of agricultural sciences on education and career development in Nebraska, offering students a glimpse into a future rich with opportunities.
