Registration is now open for the 2026 Nebraska Ranch Practicum, an intensive educational program offered by Nebraska Extension in partnership with the University of Nebraska Lincoln. The program is designed for ranchers and cattle producers who want to strengthen their understanding of range livestock production using current research and practical field experience.
The practicum follows a ranch-ready learning approach, focusing on principles that can be applied immediately to ranch operations. The course is delivered through eight sessions held across three seasons, allowing participants to observe and learn about the full livestock and forage production cycle. This structure helps connect classroom concepts with real-world seasonal conditions.
Participants will study a wide range of topics important to ranch management. These include plant identification, range of condition assessment, grazing strategies, wildlife management, and evaluation of cow body condition scores. The program also introduces decision support tools that help evaluate management and marketing alternatives. Beef cattle production systems are covered in detail to support informed and confident decision making.
Classroom sessions will begin and end in North Platte, Nebraska. Most field-based instruction will take place at the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory, a working ranch that supports education and research. Session dates are scheduled for June 2 and 3, July 1, September 9 and 10, and November 5 in 2026, followed by January 6 and 7 in 2027.
The practicum can be taken for college credit or continuing education credit. Enrollment is limited to 35 participants to ensure a high-quality learning experience. The registration fee is $750, with an additional $400 option for a spouse. The fee includes educational materials, noon meals, and breaks. Travel and lodging costs are the responsibility of participants.
Applications and payment must be submitted by May 5. Applicants will be notified of their status by May 18. Refunds will be issued if space is not available.
