Nebraska’s winter wheat production is expected to decline significantly this year, according to the latest USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service estimates based on July 1 crop conditions. The state's winter wheat harvest is forecast at 16.8 million bushels, a substantial 56% decrease from last year’s production.
The projected decline is largely the result of lower yields and a reduction in harvested acreage. Average winter wheat yield is forecast at 29 bushels per acre, down 18 bushels from 2025, while harvested area for grain is estimated at 580,000 acres, a 28% decrease compared with the previous year.
Lower productivity and fewer harvested acres have combined to reduce overall wheat output across Nebraska. The forecast reflects a challenging growing season for producers and points to a much smaller winter wheat crop than the state harvested a year ago.
Nebraska's oat crop is also expected to post lower production in 2026. Total oat production is forecast at 851,000 bushels, representing a 15% decline from last year despite an increase in harvested acreage.
Average oat yield is projected at 37 bushels per acre, down 13 bushels from 2025 levels. The lower yield outlook is expected to outweigh gains in acreage, limiting overall oat production across the state.
Unlike winter wheat, the number of acres harvested for oats is expected to increase. USDA estimates indicate that 23,000 acres will be harvested for grain, up 15% from the previous year, reflecting continued interest in oat production among Nebraska growers.
However, expanded acreage has not been enough to offset weaker crop performance. Reduced yields remain the primary factor affecting oat production, resulting in a lower harvest forecast despite the additional planted and harvested acres.
Overall, USDA projections suggest a difficult year for Nebraska grain producers. Both winter wheat and oat crops are expected to record lower production totals, with declining yields playing a major role in reducing statewide output. While oat acreage has grown, productivity challenges continue to impact results, highlighting the pressures facing producers during the current growing season.
