Nebraska Extension held its annual Nebraska Youth Crop Scouting Competition on Aug. 2, 2023, at the Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center. Eight teams participated, interacting with staff and scouting field plots. The competition provided an enriching learning journey, allowing participants to deepen their understanding of crop scouting.
Colfax County 4-H Team #2 emerged as the top contenders, winning $500 in cash prize. Colfax County 4-H Team #1, led by Josh Eisenmann, Hayden Bailey, and Rylan Nelson, secured second place with $250 reward. Both teams were mentored by Steve Nelson. Arlington FFA team, under Coach Kali Agler, secured third place.
Other noteworthy participants included two teams each from Johnson County 4-H and Kornhusker Kids 4-H Club of Cuming County. The Humphrey FFA team also marked its presence under the coaching of Robyn Graham.
The crop scouting spirit doesn't end here. A regional face-off awaits, slated for Monday, Sept. 18, 2023, where teams from Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Minnesota will compete. Representing the pride of Nebraska will be the champs from Colfax County Teams #1 and #2.
This impactful 2023 event drew sponsorship from the Nebraska Independent Crop Consultant Association, Ward Laboratories, the Nebraska Soybean Board, and UNL’s Doctor of Plant Health program. The collaboration with Nebraska Extension made it a resounding success.
