Southeast Nebraska Gears Up for 2023 Alfalfa and Wheat Expo

Southeast Nebraska Gears Up for 2023 Alfalfa and Wheat Expo

The anticipated Southeast Nebraska Alfalfa and Wheat Expo is back! Scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 24 in Crete, this event is a go-to hub for farmers and crop consultants looking to up their farming game.

The third-year expo in southeast Nebraska offers a foundation for newcomers and experienced farmers to refine their skills. Expert speakers discuss relevant issues, with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension providing unbiased, research-informed insights. Attendees also have personal interaction with industry professionals and sponsors.

Nebraska Extension educators Nathan Mueller and John Nelson focus on water and cropping, while Connor Biehler focuses on livestock systems. Their vision is to integrate alfalfa and winter wheat into crop rotations, boosting soil health, corn and soybean yields, pest management, and flexibility in cattle feeding and manure management.

Kicking off at Crete's Tuxedo Park Exhibition Building, the expo will commence at 8:15 a.m. Attendees can anticipate a light breakfast, view exhibitor booths, and even get a respirator fit-test. The learning sessions, rich in content and expertise, will start at 9 a.m., wrapping up by 3 p.m.

Morning segments, opened by Royce Schaneman of the Nebraska Wheat Board and Dave Bauer, Crete's mayor, will revolve around wheat. Highlights include discussions led by Dr. Katherine Frels, Dr. Stephen Wegulo, Dr. Romulo Lollato, and a roundtable helmed by Dr. John Nelson.

The afternoon session switches the spotlight to alfalfa. Dr. Daren Redfearn, Dr. Bob Wright, Dr. Matheus Ribeiro, and Connor Biehler will be at the helm, discussing everything from alfalfa variety to its use in cattle feed.

To wrap things up Door prizes and refreshing A&W root beer floats from 3-3:30 p.m.

Pre-registration is recommended by Aug. 22, but walk-ins are welcome. For details, register online or contact Nathan Mueller for expo-specific inquiries.
