NEFB Supports Volunteer Tax Credit Hike

NEFB Supports Volunteer Tax Credit Hike

By Scout Nelson

The Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) has recently expressed its support for a legislative proposal that aims to increase the benefits for volunteer emergency responders. This proposal, encapsulated in bill LB115, was introduced by Senator Ballard and focuses on raising the refundable income tax credit provided under the Volunteer Emergency Responders Incentive Act.

Currently, volunteer emergency responders are eligible for a tax credit of $250 per year. However, under the new bill, this amount would significantly increase to $1,000 per year. The increase is designed to better acknowledge the crucial services these volunteers provide to their communities, particularly in rural areas where emergency services are often stretched thin.

During a recent testimony, Darren Nelson, representing the Platte County Farm Bureau and speaking on behalf of NEFB, highlighted the importance of these volunteers. He stressed that enhancing the tax credit is a vital step towards ensuring that Nebraska can recruit and retain these essential service providers.

Volunteer emergency responders include firefighters, EMTs, and others who are often first on the scene in rural emergencies. Their work not only saves lives but also supports the safety and well-being of agricultural communities across the state.

The proposed increase in tax credits aims to serve as an incentive for more individuals to volunteer and for current volunteers to continue their invaluable service. It recognizes the personal sacrifices and risks taken by these individuals and aims to provide a more substantial economic acknowledgment of their contributions.

The NEFB’s support for this bill underscores the organization's commitment to advocating for policies that support the agricultural community and its associated services.

As the bill moves through the legislative process, it garners attention and support from various stakeholders who recognize the essential role of volunteer emergency responders in maintaining the safety and security of Nebraska’s communities.
