Northern Plains - powerhouse of U.S. agriculture

By Jamie Martin

The Northern Plains Region, comprising North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas, is a significant contributor to American agriculture, known for its vast flatlands and fertile soil.

According to the 2022 Census of Agriculture, this area leads in several agricultural metrics nationally, including crop and cattle sales, with a strong emphasis on young producers under the age of 35.

North Dakota stands out with 11.3% of producers under 35, ranking third nationally. It also boasts the sixth highest national sales in grains, oilseeds, dry beans, and dry peas, totaling $9.7 billion. This robust performance helps it secure the seventh position in total crop sales at $10.6 billion.

South Dakota, with 10.5% of its producers under 35, ranks seventh nationally. It holds the ninth position in sales of grains, oilseeds, dry beans, and dry peas, with revenues of $7.4 billion and is eighth in cattle and calf sales, earning $3.1 billion.

Nebraska follows closely, ranking fourth in young producers at 11.2%. It is fifth nationally in total crop sales, driven by its fourth-place ranking in grains and oilseeds sales at $13.4 billion. Additionally, Nebraska's livestock sales are impressive, placing fifth nationally at $15.4 billion, thanks in part to being third in cattle and calf sales at $12.2 billion.

Kansas, while ranking sixteenth with 9.6% of producers under 35, excels in livestock sales, ranking fourth nationally at $15.6 billion, with cattle and calf sales making up $13.6 billion of this figure, placing it second nationally.

These statistics not only highlight the agricultural vitality of the Northern Plains Region but also underscore its crucial role in the national food supply chain.
