Rural Nebraskans Report Growing Pessimism in Annual Poll

According to the 2023 Nebraska Rural Poll, there's a noticeable decline in optimism among rural Nebraskans regarding their present and future well-being. This annual poll has been monitoring these sentiments for the past 28 years.

This year marked a high level of pessimism, with 27% feling they are in a worse position than they were five years ago. This is a significant jump from 11% in 2021. Meanwhile, 45% believe they are in a better position, down from 50% the previous year.

In terms of future outlook, 39% expect to be in a better situation in a decade, a decline from the 52% recorded in 2019. L.J. McElravy from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln pointed out that although the trends weren't as positive as expected post-COVID-19 disruptions, optimism still outnumbers pessimism.

The poll further identified that younger individuals, and those with higher incomes and education, are more hopeful about their current and future situations. Moreover, the majority described their mental health as either good or excellent. Becky Vogt, Rural Poll manager, mentioned that the mental health ratings of rural Nebraskans were slightly more positive compared to national averages.

Economic perceptions could be influencing this trend towards pessimism. While there's concern about rising costs in groceries, housing, and inflation, the level of pessimism is lower than last year.

On workforce matters, Steve Schulz from the University of Nebraska at Omaha emphasized the importance of training, education, and experience for a high-skilled workforce in the future, both in rural and urban settings. Most respondents believe that apprenticeship programs and degrees are paths to good job opportunities.

The Rural Poll remains a significant annual survey analyzing rural Nebraskans' views on policy and quality of life. For comprehensive insights, the full report is available at https://ruralpoll.unl.edu.
