Smart Fertilizer Use Training Event

Smart Fertilizer Use Training Event

By Scout Nelson

The Nebraska 4Rs Nutrient Stewardship Field Day will take place on July 17, 2026, at the Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension and Education Center (ENREEC) near Mead. This event aims to help producers improve crop productivity while reducing nutrient losses and protecting water resources.

The program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It will begin with registration and a light breakfast, followed by informative sessions in the morning and hands-on field demonstrations in the afternoon. The field day focuses on the 4R Nutrient Stewardship approach, which promotes using the right source, right rate, right time, and right place for nutrient application.

Morning sessions will include expert presentations from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and other specialists. Topics will cover phosphorus and potassium management in corn and soybean systems, nitrogen efficiency, sulfur management, and global strategies for reducing nitrate loss. These sessions will also include discussions and interactive activities to help participants better understand nutrient management practices. Full details are available on the site.

In the afternoon, participants will visit demonstration sites to observe nutrient management practices in real field conditions. Two key demonstration areas will focus on phosphorus and potassium at one location, and sulfur and nitrogen management at another. These sessions will show how nutrient decisions directly affect crop yield, soil health, and environmental outcomes.

The event is designed for producers, agronomists, and industry professionals. Attendees will gain practical knowledge, understand the balance between productivity and environmental protection, and see real-world applications of scientific research.

Participants will also have the chance to connect with experts and fellow professionals. Certified Crop Advisers can earn 4.5 continuing education units by attending the event.

The field day is free to attend, but registration is required. Interested individuals can register here. For additional information, contact Javed Iqbal at 402-472-1432 or Aaron Nygren at 402-624-8030. The event will be held at ENREEC, located at 1071 County Road G, Ithaca, NE 68033.

This field day provides a valuable opportunity to learn effective and sustainable nutrient management practices that support both farm productivity and environmental care.
