Soil Health School a Must-Attend Event


The West Central Research, Extension & Education Center in North Platte hosted an enlightening two-day event, the Soil Health School, which welcomed a diverse audience including students, farmers, and individuals passionate about soil health.

The event took place on Tuesday, June 27, with a live demonstration on Wednesday, June 28, this educational gathering proved to be a game-changer for participants hoping to unravel the secrets behind nurturing robust and fertile soils.

The Soil Health School featured guest speakers from institutions like the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension and the Natural Resources Conservation Service, including 9.5 Certified Crop Advisors. They discussed essential soil health components like no-till farming, nitrogen fixation, manure roles, and emerging carbon markets.

Paul Jasa, an Extension Engineer at UNL, delivered an insightful presentation on the importance of healthy soil in no-till farming and crop residue. He highlighted the need to halt soil degradation and promote healthier crops, food, and thriving communities.

Carlos Villarreal, a soil scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resource Conservation Service, demonstrated the benefits of no-till soil with residue, including superior erosion control, enhanced rainfall absorption, and improved soil biology, using a live rainfall simulator.

The event also featured a dynamic panel discussion, bringing together numerous Certified Crop Advisors and extension educators. They fielded questions from the eager audience, shedding light on various aspects of soil health and fostering engaging dialogue.

The Soil Health School was met with huge success, attracting a substantial audience and delivering valuable insights on crucial topics within the crop production industry. By empowering participants with practical knowledge and fostering a deep appreciation for sustainable soil practices, this event sowed the seeds for a more resilient and prosperous agricultural landscape.
