Steve Nelson honored with Silver Eagle Award

By Scout Nelson

The Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) has chosen Steve Nelson of Axtell as the recipient of its prestigious Silver Eagle Award for 2024. Nelson will receive this honor on December 10 at the Nebraska Farm Bureau Annual Meeting and Convention in Kearney.

“Nelson has devoted his entire life to agriculture, showcasing unwavering commitment and service to the agricultural community in Nebraska. He has served as a passionate advocate and a representative striving to enhance the well-being of all farm and ranch families across the state,” said Mark McHargue, NEFB president.

Nelson’s journey in agriculture began in the early 1970s as a high school student. Today, he and his wife, Elma, operate a sixth-generation family farm near Axtell, growing corn, hybrid seed corn, and soybeans.

After graduating from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Nelson began working with the Farm Bureau, taking on various roles at the Kearney/Franklin County Farm Bureau and later being elected to the state Board of Directors in 1997. His leadership continued as he served as the first vice president in 2002 and was elected NEFB president in 2011.

On the national level, Nelson joined the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Board of Directors in 2014, serving on multiple committees focused on agricultural trade, water quality, feed grains, and technology. He has represented Nebraska agriculture on trade missions to countries such as China, Mexico, France, and Taiwan, fostering international agricultural connections.

During his tenure, Nelson prioritized expanding agricultural trade, developing new markets for Nebraska’s products, and addressing high property taxes that impact the state’s farmers. He also played a major role in the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation, which bridges gaps between agriculture and urban communities and supports leadership and youth development programs.

In recognition of his service, the NEFB established the Steve Nelson Yeutter Institute International Trade Internship Award upon his retirement as NEFB president in 2020. This award offers students at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln the chance to intern in Washington, D.C., and gain valuable experience in trade policy.

Nelson remains active in state and national agricultural organizations and is a lifelong member of Bethany Lutheran Church. He and Elma are members of the Compassionate Friends organization, supporting families after the loss of their daughter. They have two other children and five grandchildren. NEFB celebrates Nelson’s dedication and contributions to Nebraska’s agricultural future.
