UNL's Nebraska soil health school set for April 24

By Scout Nelson

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) is gearing up to host a crucial educational event, the Nebraska Soil Health School, on Wednesday, April 24.

This event, sponsored by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), will take place at UNL’s High Plains Ag Lab in Sidney, kicking off with registration and refreshments at 7:30 a.m. Bijesh Maharjan, UNL associate professor and the event's organizer, will welcome attendees.

Building on the success of last year's Soil Health School, this year's edition will tackle specific agricultural challenges faced by growers in the area. The program aims to enrich participants' understanding of soil health and its pivotal role in sustainable dryland cropping systems.

Esteemed speakers such as Gary Peterson, Cody Creech, David Nielsen, and others will share their expertise on various topics, including the impact of tillage, biochar, and cover crops on soil, soil health measurements, carbon markets, and the benefits of no-till management practices.

Highlighting the event are keynote speakers Drs. Nielsen and Peterson, renowned for their contributions to dryland cropping issues. Their insights will focus on enhancing water use efficiency and profitability in cropping systems, vital for Great Plains agriculture and beyond.

Attendees will also experience NRCS soil health demonstrations, a live rainfall simulator, and tours of the High Plains Ag Lab's research plots, offering a hands-on learning experience about the latest in soil health advancements.

The event is free, with a full lunch provided, and offers Continuing Education Units for certified crop advisors. Those interested in attending can pre-register.

For more details and registration, visit the event’s registration page at https://unlcba.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3lr2CyTPO8AkWIC.
