Agriculture's big year - congressional focus on farming in 2024

Agriculture's big year - congressional focus on farming in 2024

By Scout Nelson

As Congress reconvenes in 2024, the Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) is actively setting legislative priorities for a year poised to bring significant changes in agricultural policy.  With all five members of Nebraska's congressional delegation facing reelection, coupled with a presidential election, 2024 stands to be a pivotal year for farming policy.

A primary focus for NEFB is the Farm Bill. Left unresolved in 2023, Congress must tackle various aspects of this bill, including federal nutrition programs, commodity and conservation program reforms, and crop insurance protection.  NEFB's involvement in shaping this bill reflects their commitment to addressing the diverse needs of the agricultural sector.

Another significant issue is California's Proposition 12, which sets new animal welfare standards and impacts the national agriculture industry. NEFB, along with the American Farm Bureau, is pushing for federal legislation to address the challenges posed by this proposition.

Tax policy also remains a top priority. With key provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act set to expire in 2025, NEFB is advocating for the renewal of crucial tax benefits that support farmers and ranchers, emphasizing the need for policies that recognize the unique nature of agricultural businesses.

NEFB is focused on reducing the burden of federal regulations on the agricultural community. This includes engaging with the Environmental Protection Agency on regulations impacting water, crop protection products, and emissions standards. The proposed regulations on pesticides and their impact on endangered species will be a key area of NEFB's advocacy.

Overall, 2024 promises to be a year of significant activity and advocacy for NEFB as they navigate the political landscape and champion the needs and concerns of the agricultural sector.
