Corn and Dry Bean Harvest Kicks Off in Nebraska

Corn and Dry Bean Harvest Kicks Off in Nebraska

The latest updates on Nebraska's farming activities present an optimistic scenario. For the week that ended on September 10, 2023, farmers had a good 6.3 days perfect for fieldwork, as reported by the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Soil moisture, a crucial element for crops, showed mixed ratings. The topsoil had 30% rated as very short, with the rest ranging from short to surplus. Subsoil statistics mirrored this trend closely.

The state's corn crop presents a mixed bag. While 11% of the corn is in very poor condition, a commendable 51% ranks between good and excellent. Moreover, corn maturity and denting rates surpass both last years and the five-year average numbers.

Soybeans, another significant crop for Nebraska, had 46% between good and excellent conditions. Interestingly, more than half of the soybeans have started dropping their leaves, which is ahead of last year's pace.

Winter wheat planting is also underway, aligning with the average rate. Sorghum conditions looked promising, with 60% ranging from fair to excellent. The crop's coloring and maturity rates outpace last year's statistics.

Dry edible beans, essential for the food industry, showed a majority in good condition. Their growth stages, from setting pods to dropping leaves, stay close to last year's figures, with a small percentage already harvested.

Lastly, the pasture and range conditions appear satisfactory. While some areas experience very poor conditions, a majority are in fair to excellent shape, ensuring the livestock has ample resources.
