Cover Crop Demo Highlights Soil Health

Cover Crop Demo Highlights Soil Health

By Scout Nelson

On July 8, 2025, the Bazile Groundwater Management Area Project and Bow Creek Watershed Project will co-host a Regenerative Ag Field Day in collaboration with a local producer. This event will highlight innovative techniques using cover crops and regenerative strips.

The demonstration field includes alternating 10-foot strips of green corn rows and covering crops. These regenerative strips are later roller crimped across the field to improve weed control and fertility for corn production. A warm-season diverse cover crop mix will be drilled into the strips, followed by a cool-season mix later in the season. Livestock will graze the strips rotationally, reducing biomass by 50% before moving to the next strip.

Key sessions include a planning overview of the project’s objectives and expectations. Attendees will also hear from a representative from Green Cover Crops about the specific seed mixes used in the strips.

A livestock Extension educator from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) will explain how the crop mixes support rotational grazing and provide forage benefits. UNL’s statewide soil health specialist will highlight soil health improvements, present biomass data, and analyze the open root pit to showcase root depth and development.

Additionally, a UNL cropping Extension educator will demonstrate a water infiltration kit, explaining how it affects soil structure and crop yield.

Attendees will also get a close look at the tools used in the field, including a roller crimper, inter-seeder high boys, and seed drills.

This field day presents a unique opportunity to explore regenerative agriculture in action and better understand how these practices contribute to crop and livestock productivity while improving soil health.
