Crop Conditions in Nebraska: What's the Outlook?


The latest report from the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service reveals the fieldwork conditions and crop progress in Nebraska for the week ending July 16, 2023. The week provided farmers with 4.6 days suitable for fieldwork, allowing for necessary agricultural activities.

The availability of topsoil moisture was classified as 10% very short, 25% short, 61% adequate, and 4% surplus. The availability of subsoil moisture was classified as 20% extremely short, 36% short, 43% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Field Crop Report:

Corn's field crop report showed that it was in 4% very poor, 10% poor, 23% fair, 43% good, and 20% exceptional condition. Progress on maize silking increased to 52%, above both the five-year average of 43% and the 40% from the previous year. Progress on the dough stage was 1%, which was similar to the previous year and somewhat less than the average of 3%.

12% poor, 28% fair, 41% good, 7% very poor, and 12% outstanding were the ratings for soybean condition. Soybeans were blooming at 61%, ahead of both the 53% from last year and the average of 58%. Setting pods progress was reported as 20%, surpassing the 12% from last year and near the average of 17%.

Condition ratings for winter wheat were as follows: 8% very poor, 19% poor, 40% fair, 29% good, and 4% outstanding. Winter wheat harvest progress stood at 21%, significantly behind both the 57% from last year and the average of 52%.

Sorghum condition was reported as 1% very poor, 4% poor, 29% fair, 58% good, and 8% excellent. Sorghum headed progress reached 5%, slightly below both last year's 9% and the average of 15%.

Pasture and Range Report:

Pasture and range conditions were rated as 3% very poor, 10% poor, 29% fair, 47% good, and 11% excellent.

The report indicates a mixed picture of crop conditions in Nebraska, with adequate moisture supplies and varying progress across different crops. Pasture and range conditions were generally favorable, providing a positive outlook for livestock grazing.
