Former NDSU Ag Faculty Member Dies



Longtime NDSU faculty member Frederick “Larry” Leistritz died Jan. 19 at age 77 in West Fargo.

Leistritz joined what was then called the NDSU Department of Agricultural Economics in August 1970 and retired in December 2011, holding an academic appointment at the university for 41 years. He was granted professor emeritus status in 2012.

He was well known across the state and region for his many economic impact and agricultural studies.

Leistritz established the Institute of Natural Resources and Economic Development and received several honors, including the 2005 Distinguished Scholar of the Western Agricultural Economics Association, 1998 Business and Industrial Development Award from the Greater North Dakota Association and 1994 Fargo Chamber of Commerce NDSU Distinguished Professor Award.

He also was president of the Western Agricultural Economics Association and the International Association of Impact Assessment.

During his career, Leistritz wrote more than 400 research publications, including 120 refereed journal articles and 12 books. He earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in agricultural economics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
