From Sneakers to Boots: Youth Showcase Skills in Livestock Arena

From Sneakers to Boots: Youth Showcase Skills in Livestock Arena

A championship quest starts with early morning workouts, camps, coaching, and sacrifice. What’s true in the gym is also the case in a very different arena as competitors trade their sneakers for boots.

“For a lot of these kids this is their sport,” said Abby Stallbaumer of Oconto.

She would know. She’s on the junior board for the Maine Anjou Association and she’s also a state track champion who has competed in several sports.

“So we might practice volleyball very day and play games 3 times a week, we work with these calves every day and hit weekends every single weekend in the spring,” she said.

They spend weekends at livestock shows just as some may be at tournaments.

“A lot of kids do baseball, football, softball these kids that grew up on a farm, this is what they do and this is where they highlight those achievements,” said Lindsey Broek of the American Maine Anjou Association

And like sports it’s a commitment of time and money but for many this is also directly related to how their families make a living on the farm and many families want to pass along their land and legacy.

“That would definitely be our goal to facilitate that however we can,” Broek said.

“The next generation is in this building,” said Morayah Cupp of Champion in southwest Nebraska.
