G.I. Ag day lights up ag curiosity in fourth graders

G.I. Ag Day recently brought the wonders of agriculture closer to over 700 fourth graders from 15 schools across the Grand Island area. Organized by the Hall County Ag Committee for its 22nd year, the event aimed to fill the knowledge gap in agriculture among young students.

Annette Schimmer, the event's chair, highlighted the importance of educating students about agriculture, a subject that receives limited attention in schools.

The event featured various stations, each dedicated to different agricultural aspects, such as the uses of corn, livestock by-products, and the latest in farming technology.

Live animal stations were particularly popular, offering many children their first close-up experience with pigs, cows, and other farm animals. Schimmer noted the shift towards using modern technology to engage students, reflecting on the evolution of teaching methods over the years.

Educators, farmers, and industry experts took turns at these stations, connecting agricultural practices to everyday life and sparking interest in potential agricultural careers among the young attendees.

Schimmer hopes the event not only educates but also inspires students to consider the vast opportunities within the agricultural sector.

Sponsors of G.I. Ag Day included the Nebraska Cattle Women, Grand Island Northwest High School FFA, and several other local agricultural organizations, emphasizing the community's commitment to agricultural education.

The event aligns with the fourth-grade curriculum on Nebraska history, highlighting agriculture's crucial role in the state's development.

Through hands-on learning and interactive demonstrations, G.I. Ag Day has once again succeeded in its mission to broaden children's understanding of agriculture and its significance to their daily lives and future career possibilities.
