Heuermann Lecture Addresses Food Challenges

Heuermann Lecture Addresses Food Challenges

By Scout Nelson

The Heuermann Lecture will focus on the importance of collaboration and thoughtful dialogue in addressing today’s agricultural challenges. As agriculture continues to shape how food is produced and shared, open discussion remains essential for building solutions that are responsible, nutritious, and sustainable.

The lecture will take place on Tuesday, March 3, and will feature Tamar Haspel as the keynote speaker. She is a James Beard Award–winning columnist known for her work on food systems, diet, and the environmental impacts of agriculture. Her presentation will explore how constructive conversations can help people with different viewpoints to work together toward shared goals.

As the global population moves beyond eight billion, agriculture faces growing pressure to produce more food while also protecting natural resources. The lecture will emphasize that progress often begins with listening, learning, and engaging openly. When individuals and communities approach challenges with respect and curiosity, stronger ideas and better outcomes can emerge.

The Heuermann Lecture will highlight how solutions-focused dialogue can bridge divides across the food and agriculture system. By encouraging collaboration among producers, researchers, policymakers, and consumers, agriculture can continue to adapt to changing demands while maintaining long-term sustainability. The discussion will also underline the role of clear communication in building trust and understanding across sectors.

The event is free and open to the public, making it accessible to students, professionals, and community members with an interest in agriculture and food systems. The lecture will begin at 4 p.m. in the auditorium of the Nebraska Innovation Campus Conference Center, located at 2021 Transformation Drive in Lincoln.

By bringing people together around shared challenges, the Heuermann Lecture aims to inspire thoughtful engagement and practical thinking. The event will encourage attendees to consider how respectful dialogue and collaboration can support meaningful progress in agriculture today and in the future.
