Nebraska agriculture department encourages specialty crop development

Nebraska agriculture department encourages specialty crop development

By Scout Nelson

Nebraska's agricultural diversity encompasses a wide array of traditional and specialty crops. To stimulate the growth of the state's specialty crop sector, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) is extending an invitation for proposals aimed at research, development, and marketing initiatives through the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP), generously funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In 2024, NDA anticipates allocating approximately $820,000 to the SCBG program, providing a valuable opportunity for producers, organizations, state agencies, and other stakeholders to submit their proposals. These proposals will be carefully evaluated based on specific criteria, with selected projects expected to be announced in the upcoming fall.

This initiative holds great promise for elevating Nebraska's specialty crop industry, potentially fostering innovation, sustainability, and market competitiveness. Beyond financial support, it encourages collaboration and the formulation of strategies to enhance the standing of specialty crops within the agricultural landscape.

The SCBG Program represents a significant avenue for individuals and organizations dedicated to advancing the agricultural industry. By funding research and development projects, the program seeks to address challenges, seize opportunities, and enhance the specialty crop industry's presence both locally and nationally.
