Nebraska boosts ag trade with Indonesia visit

Recently, Nebraska products were the focus of a trade mission to Indonesia, which was led by Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly to investigate prospects for market expansion. The delegation of more than twenty people took part in meetings and events to promote Nebraska's beef, pork, soybeans, corn, and grains.

Among them were representatives from the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA), the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED), the University of Nebraska, and several agricultural businesses.“Importers are very interested to know about how our products are grown and raised.

They value family connections and sustainability – all things that are important in Nebraska agriculture – and make our state a standout in the food products we have to offer,” said Lt. Gov. Kelly. He and NDA Director Sherry Vinton emphasized the quality of Nebraska’s family farming operations and the pride in producing top-notch products.

Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy and the fourth-most populous country, offers significant market opportunities. Nebraska’s top exports to Indonesia include soybeans, corn, wheat, and beef.

The delegation's itinerary featured meetings with the U.S. Grains Council, beef import associations, and visits to a feed mill, ethanol fueling station, and tempeh factory. 

At the Indo Livestock Expo and Forum and the Jakarta International Expo for Food, the team discussed strengthening relationships and market opportunities with the new U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia, Kamala Sharon Lakhdhir.

At IPB University’s SEAFAST Center, Dr. Chris Calkins and Dr. Jessie Morrill from the University of Nebraska conducted workshops for culinary students, promoting the unique qualities of Nebraska beef. Lt. Gov. Kelly also demonstrated beef preparation at Grand Indonesia Ranch Market.

 Lt. Gov. Kelly emphasized the productivity of the trade mission and the potential for Nebraska to meet the growing demand for high-quality meat products in Indonesia.

“Nebraska helps to feed the world and their customers are demanding higher quality meat products, which is where we fit right in,” he said.
