Nebraska, a key player in America's meat production and processing sector, is set to further strengthen its capabilities thanks to the Independent Processor Assistance Program (IPAP). With a successful history of aiding 62 livestock producers and meat processors, the program, backed by American Rescue Plan Act funds, is poised for a new round of grants.
In 2024, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) will allocate approximately $5.1 million in IPAP grants. These funds are targeted to enhance and expand meat processing facilities in Nebraska. Applications for these grants open on January 16, 2024, and the deadline is set for February 16, 2024.
Sherry Vinton, NDA Director, highlighted the significant impact of the previous IPAP grants, which enabled improvements ranging from increased freezer capacity to the addition of new equipment. The upcoming grants promise to further innovate and strengthen Nebraska's meat processing sector.
Eligibility for these grants is specific to currently operating meat processors in Nebraska. They must meet certain criteria, including operational status as a USDA-FSIS facility or a federally regulated custom-exempt slaughter and processing facility, compliance with federal regulations, and financial and operational thresholds.
To assist applicants, an AmpliFund software training session is scheduled for January 17, 2024. This session aims to streamline the application process, with registration available online. The training will be accessible for later viewing on the NDA website.
While previous grant recipients can reapply, preference will be given to new applicants. Grants, potentially reaching up to $100,000, will cover eligible expenses incurred after August 28, 2021. The announcement of the successful projects is expected by the end of April.
