Nebraska boosts specialty crops with new grant opportunities

By Scout Nelson

Nebraska, known for its varied landscapes and fertile soils, is stepping up efforts to diversify its agricultural production. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) invites proposals for the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP).

Funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, this program supports projects in research, development, and marketing of specialty crops. Proposals are due by January 31, 2024.

Casey Foster, the SCBG Program Manager, highlights the program's role in diversifying farm operations, adding both value and variety to Nebraska's agriculture. An online application process makes it easier for farmers and other stakeholders to submit innovative project ideas.

For 2024, the NDA anticipates around $820,000 available for new projects. This opportunity is open to producers, various organizations, educational groups, and others involved in specialty crops. Previously, Nebraska organizations received over $823,000 in similar grants.

NDA utilizes AmpliFund for grant applications, with resources and a webinar available on their website at NDA's Specialty Crop Page. This includes proposal instructions and program guidelines.

Proposals will undergo a rigorous review and scoring process. Successful first-round applicants will be requested to provide further information, with funded projects announced in the fall.

For more details on eligible crops and past funded projects, visit the USDA's SCBGP page at USDA SCBGP. Casey Foster can be contacted for additional information at 402-471-6857 or via email at casey.foster@nebraska.gov
