Nebraska corn growers spearhead national ag policy reforms

By Scout Nelson

In a significant move shaping the agricultural landscape, Nebraska's corn growers have emerged as key influencers in national agricultural policies. Their efforts have notably addressed critical issues such as tariffs, trade, and ethanol, greatly impacting farmers across the country.

One notable achievement was Nebraska's leadership in addressing phosphate tariffs. This initiative, started by Nebraska and supported by other states, led to a reduction in tariffs. The result was a substantial financial benefit for growers, with an estimated $95 saved per acre.

Nebraska's influence extends to several key committees of the National Corn Growers Association, with four out of seven currently chaired by individuals from the state.  This prominence underscores Nebraska's significant role in shaping national agricultural dialogues and policies.

Ethanol policy has been another area where Nebraska has made a considerable impact. The state has been instrumental in advocating for nationwide, year-round access to higher ethanol blends. This initiative aligns with the state-level success in expanding access to E15 ethanol blends at gas stations, demonstrating Nebraska's commitment to sustainable agriculture and renewable energy sources.

Nebraska corn growers have been active in addressing international trade issues, particularly regarding Mexico's proposed ban on GMO white corn. Given that Nebraska is a leading grower of white corn, this issue was of particular importance and highlighted the state's ability to bring local concerns to the national stage.

As discussions around the farm bill continue, Nebraska's leadership ensures that the state's interests and perspectives are well-represented, particularly concerning the safety net for farmers.

Nebraska's corn growers have positioned themselves as crucial players in national agricultural policy, effectively addressing key issues and representing the interests of farmers nationwide.
