Nebraska Farmers Advocate for Key Ag Changes in D.C.

Nebraska Farmers Advocate for Key Ag Changes in D.C.

By Scout Nelson

Nebraska's agricultural future depends on the upcoming Farm Bill. This urgency was clear when members of the Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&R) Committee visited Washington, D.C., expressing their concerns to the state's congressional delegation.

While politics often muddies the Farm Bill, it's a chance for officials to tackle challenges in the agri-food chain. A crucial point: ensuring federal crop insurance remains separate from climate-focused practices. Such a distinction ensures that farmers can safeguard their operations without undue restrictions.

Jill England, a YF&R committee member, emphasized that tying climate-focused practices to federal crop insurance compromises its effectiveness. The consequences of California’s Proposition 12 also came into focus. The committee appreciated the Nebraska congressional delegation's support of the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act, addressing Prop 12 issues.

Jaden Melnick, representing YF&R, stressed the importance of preventing individual states from dictating nationwide production standards. With the Supreme Court upholding Prop 12, they're hoping for a legislative solution.

Pesticide regulations are also under the microscope. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is reevaluating its labeling process due to a lawsuit. Proposed changes, aiming to protect endangered species, might restrict herbicide use significantly. Such regulations threaten farm yields and the decision-making freedom of producers.

Matthew Erickson, a YF&R member, voiced concerns about these changes, urging the EPA to reconsider and find a balance that maintains both environmental and agricultural interests.

The YF&R committee serves as a bridge, connecting young ag professionals from Nebraska, fostering leadership, and shaping tomorrow's ag leaders.

David Schuler, a YF&R participant, highlighted the importance of direct communication between producers and policymakers. The committee's visit not only provided a platform for their voices but also fostered interactions with various organizations, like the Environmental Defense Fund, Animal Ag Alliance, and the USDA Chief Economist’s office.

The participating members from YF&R in this pivotal visit included Jaden Melnick, Jill England, David and Christy Schuler, and Matthew Erickson.
