The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has launched its annual survey to determine planting intentions for the 2025 growing season. This data is crucial in forecasting agricultural production and market trends for the year ahead.
The survey, part of the March Agricultural Survey, provides essential insights into the types of crops producers plan to grow, the total acres expected to be planted, and the quantities of grain and oilseed stored. The information gathered will contribute to USDA’s Prospective Plantings report, a widely anticipated publication that offers the first survey-based estimates of national planting trends.
NASS mailed survey questionnaires on February 18, asking producers to submit responses through mail or an online portal. Those who do not respond by February 27 may receive a follow-up phone interview. This effort ensures comprehensive and accurate data collection to support decision-making in the agriculture industry.
Highlighting the importance of this survey, NASS Northern Plains Regional Director Nicholas Streff stated, “Each year, the agriculture industry eagerly awaits USDA’s Prospective Plantings report, which provides the first survey-based estimates of U.S. farmers’ planting intentions for the year. The March Agricultural Survey provides the factual data that underpins these projections, making it one of the most important surveys we conduct each year.”
To maintain confidentiality, NASS ensures that all responses are kept private, and only aggregated data is published. No individual operation or producer is identified in any report.
By participating in this survey, producers contribute valuable insights that help shape agricultural policies, market strategies, and resource planning for the upcoming season. The results of this survey will be released in USDA’s Prospective Plantings report at the end of March, providing a comprehensive outlook on the nation’s crop production plans.
