Nebraska hit by avian flu crisis

Nebraska hit by avian flu crisis

By Scout Nelson

In 2024, Nebraska's poultry industry faced significant challenges with the detection of six cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) across multiple counties. This severe outbreak, confirmed by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture in collaboration with the USDA's Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, has placed considerable strain on commercial broiler operations.

The virus, known for its aggressive contagion among birds, manifests through respiratory issues, reduced appetite, and sudden mortality. Notably, it affects domesticated birds with deadly efficacy while wild carriers remain asymptomatic. With outbreaks recorded from Gage County in early February to multiple occurrences in December across Nemaha, Dodge, Sarpy, Lancaster, and Johnson counties, the agricultural sector is on high alert.

HPAI spreads through contaminated food, water, and contact with infected birds, making containment challenging. The virus's resilience in environments complicates eradication efforts, surviving for weeks under certain conditions. Nebraska's authorities have initiated stringent biosecurity measures to curtail the spread, emphasizing the importance of sanitation and controlled access to poultry facilities.

State resources and guidelines are available for affected producers, offering necessary support to navigate the crisis. Immediate reporting of symptoms and unusual poultry deaths is encouraged to aid in rapid response and management of the situation.

This ongoing situation underscores the critical need for vigilance and proactive health management within the poultry industry to mitigate the impact of such outbreaks and safeguard Nebraska's agricultural interests.
