Nebraska Soil Expert Wins Top Extension Award

Nebraska Soil Expert Wins Top Extension Award

By Scout Nelson

A Nebraska Extension soil specialist has been honoured with the 2024 Gamma Sigma Delta Award for Outstanding Extension Program. Based at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Panhandle Research, Extension, and Education Center, the specialist is widely recognized for research in soil fertility and health.

This program focuses on crops like corn, sugar beet, winter wheat, dry beans, and mint. Notably, a three-year nitrogen study led to a new model reducing nitrogen use in sugar beet farming by 20–30%, which improves sugar yield and lowers costs.

With support from the USDA's NRCS Conservation Innovation Grant, a $1.1 million on-farm trial will evaluate this nitrogen model across 50 fields in Nebraska and neighbouring states. The effort reflects a growing focus on sustainability and improved soil management.

The research also includes studying coal char, a byproduct from sugar processing plants. Trials showed it benefits soil, helping clear waste and boost productivity.

Alongside research, the specialist contributed to defining terms like "soil health gap" and "soil health cycle," helping professionals understand soil health better. His insights led to an invitation from the Nebraska Department of Agriculture's Healthy Soil Task Force and involvement in the newly formed Soil Health Coalition.

A major outreach success is the Nebraska Soil Health School. Partnering with USDA NRCS, the school has reached over 600 participants in just two years. Attendees include growers, consultants, students, and educators.

“The school connects researchers and practitioners, offering a space for knowledge-sharing and innovation,” said USDA Nebraska State Soil Scientist Carlos Villarreal.

From innovative nitrogen models to hands-on training, this program sets a strong example of agricultural research and collaboration in action.
