Nebraska state fair takes precautions for cattle

By Scout Nelson

Nebraska officials are taking proactive steps to address concerns about H5N1 after multiple surrounding states reported cases in dairy cows. Although no cases have been detected in Nebraska, the state is implementing precautionary measures ahead of the upcoming Nebraska State Fair.

The dairy parlor will remain a key attraction at this year’s fair, but dairy cow owners must have their animals’ milk tested within seven days of arriving at the fairgrounds. This decision was made after discussions with state health and agricultural experts to ensure the safety of both livestock and the public.

Jaime Parr, executive director of the Nebraska State Fair, emphasized the importance of staying informed about the situation. “Currently, there are zero cases of H5N1 in the state of Nebraska,” Parr said.

“We are certainly aware, though, of what's happening around us in other states, and being mindful of that, it caused the communications with the Health Department and the Department of Ag and the State Vet.”

As the fair’s opening day approaches, officials continue to closely monitor the livestock situation. Vaughn Sievers, state fair agriculture director, reassured that there have been no positive cases in Nebraska so far. He noted that ongoing communication with authorities will be crucial as the event nears.
