The University of Nebraska is hosting a one-day conference on organic agriculture, aiming to equip growers with the necessary tools and knowledge for a smooth transition. The event, involving researchers, extension personnel, and local farmers, will focus on enhancing soil fertility, effective weed management, and developing resilient crop rotations for organic grain farms.
The conference, aimed at transitioning and newly certified organic farmers, will take place on November 8 at the University of Nebraska Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension, and Education Center in Mead, Nebraska, with registration starting at 8:30 a.m.
The University of Nebraska's Statewide Soil Health Extension Educator, Katja Koehler-Cole, emphasizes the complexity of transitioning to certified organic farming, stating it requires meticulous planning, recordkeeping, and significant management changes. The event aims to promote community and connection among farmers, professionals, and researchers.
The program features an array of insightful segments, including:
- Expert guidance on weed control in organic grain systems by UNL's own Stevan Knezevic.
- A thorough breakdown of the organic certification process by Karlin Warner from OneCert.
- A deep dive into the use of manure as a fertilizer in organic systems by Amy Schmidt, a seasoned UNL professor specializing in animal manure management.
- An exploration of organic no-till strategies, minus specific farmer references.
Attendees will have enough opportunities for interaction and networking with peers and veterans in the field of organic grain farming, as well as time to engage with various vendors. The program wraps up with a speakers panel, encouraging dialogue with experts intimately familiar with organic grain farming practices.
While there's no admission fee, pre-registration by November 5 is crucial for ensuring availability of resource materials and proper meal arrangements. Seating is capped, so early registration is advised.
