The Rural Response Hotline, established in Nebraska in 1984, has helped over 13,000 individuals in crisis, especially since 1999, thanks to its mental health voucher initiative, which has been instrumental in addressing farm crises.
As the hotline expanded, it became a comprehensive resource for farmers and ranchers. One of its standout services offers free mental health vouchers for rural residents. In 2022 alone, they distributed over 8,000 such vouchers and answered almost 7,000 calls. A noteworthy 372 clinicians from across the state contribute to this initiative.
Suicide has become a significant concern, especially in rural areas. Figures from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reveal about one person dies by suicide every 11 minutes. Rural areas have seen a concerning rise in suicide rates, escalating by 46% between 2000 and 2020. Farmers' suicide rates are alarmingly high, being three and a half times more than the general populace.
Michelle Soll from Legal Aid of Nebraska commented on the resource scarcity in greater Nebraska, particularly in mental health. She emphasized the crucial role of the Rural Response Hotline, dubbing it a "lifeline" connecting those in crisis with life-altering resources.
Apart from mental health support, the hotline offers consultations with financial advisors and legal professionals, helping farmers make informed decisions. They also guide callers toward disaster relief during challenging times. They host free monthly clinics discussing specialized topics such as succession planning and mediation.
The Rural Response Hotline, the longest standing of its kind, is governed by partners like Nebraska Farmers Union and Farm Aid, who collaborate with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services for their mental health program and the Nebraska Department of Agriculture for their monthly clinics.
