Smart Parasite Control Boosts Ranch Profits

Smart Parasite Control Boosts Ranch Profits

By Jamie Martin

At Leaning Oak Ranch in Oklahoma, producer Buck Rich and veterinarian Dr. Tyler Thomas control cattle parasites through a precise four step program that keeps the herd productive and limits resistance.

Diagnostics come first. Fecal testing shows if treatment is needed and confirms results after deworming, saving unnecessary costs and improving accuracy.

They use combination treatment, pairing two dewormers from different chemical classes at the same time. This dual action approach hits parasites from multiple angles and slows the development of resistance.

The team also practices refugia, deliberately leaving a portion of the herd untreated. This maintains a population of susceptible parasites, helping dilute resistant strains and extend the life of existing products.

Effective management completes the plan. Regular pasture moves and leaving enough grass reduce parasite exposure. Keeping cattle grazing above the lower two inches limits contact with infective larvae and improves pasture recovery.

Rich and Thomas adapt this strategy to changing weather and marketing needs, proving that strategic planning protects animal health and lowers expenses. “It’s about using the tools we have wisely,” said Dr. Washburn. “When you put diagnostics, combination treatment, refugia and management together, you’re building something more sustainable — and profitable.”
