USDA grants millions for pest control

By Jamie Martin

The USDA is investing $70 million in 357 projects for Fiscal Year 2025 through the Plant Protection Act’s Section 7721 program. This funding will help protect U.S. agriculture and natural resources from invasive pests and diseases, benefiting 49 states, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

“This funding provides our partners throughout the country the tools they need to help protect U.S. agriculture, our natural resources, and food security,” said Jenny Lester Moffitt, Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs.

Key initiatives include $5.8 million for pest-detecting dog teams, $2.5 million for Tribal and minority organization research, and $1.5 million for honeybee surveys in 44 states. Additionally, $1.1 million will safeguard American boxwoods, and $1.6 million will ensure disease-free citrus planting materials.

The USDA has also allocated $10 million for emergency pest responses, addressing threats like the Asian longhorned beetle and spotted lanternfly. These investments aim to reduce economic losses and enhance agricultural resilience.

Since 2009, the USDA has funded over 5,800 projects, investing nearly $940 million to protect U.S. crops and natural resources. For more information, visit USDA Projects.
