USDA increases Grant funding in Nebraska

By Scout Nelson

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is offering a significant opportunity for Nebraska's agricultural producers and small businesses through its Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). This initiative, part of the broader Farm Bill, is designed to help applicants finance renewable energy systems and energy efficiency improvements.

The Inflation Reduction Act recently injected nearly $2 billion into REAP, bolstering its capacity to support rural economies.

Christopher Faber, the Nebraska USDA Rural Development State Energy Coordinator, highlighted recent enhancements to the program.

Notably, the percentage of project costs covered by grants has doubled from 25% to 50%, making the funding more accessible than ever. Eligible parties include agricultural producers engaged in daily farm operations who earn at least 50% of their income from agricultural activities, as well as small businesses in areas with populations under 50,000.

Success stories under this program include Darr Grain in Cozad, which is constructing two wind turbines projected to cut their electricity expenses by up to $10,000 annually. Another beneficiary, Alan Koelling, a fourth-generation farmer in Ord, invested in a new, more efficient centrifuge for his sunflower oil business with the help of REAP funding.

This equipment has significantly sped up production, expanded sales, and facilitated part-time employment opportunities in the community.

Faber also mentioned that free grant-writing assistance is available to help applicants navigate the process. This initiative aims to boost energy efficiency and sustainability and supports the economic viability of rural enterprises in Nebraska.
