Corn and Soybean harvest shows mixed results

For the week ending September 29, 2024, there were 6.8 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture was rated 30% very short, 37% short, 32% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were 24% very short, 40% short, 35% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Field Crops Report:

Corn condition rated 4% very poor, 7% poor, 20% fair, 48% good, and 21% excellent. Corn maturity reached 79%, near last year’s 81% and ahead of the five-year average of 74%. Harvested corn reached 17%, slightly behind last year’s 20% but ahead of the five-year average of 16%.

Soybean condition was rated 3% very poor, 6% poor, 23% fair, 51% good, and 17% excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves stood at 88%, close to last year’s 92% and equal to the five-year average. Harvested soybeans were at 24%, near both last year’s 25% and the five-year average of 23%.

Winter wheat planting reached 71%, near last year’s 74% and ahead of the five-year average of 67%. Emerged wheat was at 20%, behind last year’s 31%, but close to the 24% average.

The Sorghum condition was rated 0% very poor, 3% poor, 20% fair, 52% good, and 25% excellent. Sorghum maturity stood at 57%, close to both last years and the five-year average of 59%. Sorghum harvest progress was at 6%, behind last year’s 12% and close to the 10% average.

Dry edible bean condition rated 1% very poor, 5% poor, 23% fair, 46% good, and 25% excellent. Dry edible beans dropping leaves reached 85%, near last year’s 84% but behind the five-year average of 90%. The harvested crop stood at 56%, close to last year’s 52%, but behind the five-year average of 64%.

Pasture and Range Report:

Pasture and range conditions were rated 13% very poor, 28% poor, 33% fair, 21% good, and 5% excellent. Moisture supplies and crop conditions indicate variable performance across regions, but overall progress is steady in key areas.
