Nebraska Beef quality assurance offers BQA and BQAT certifications

By Scout Nelson

Nebraska Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) is hosting an event to provide the latest updates on the BQA and BQA Transportation (BQAT) programs, while certifying or recertifying beef producers and transporters.

The BQA and BQAT programs educate participants on best practices for animal health, proper stockmanship, and animal welfare guidelines, ensuring producers meet industry standards.

“Beef cattle producers who are committed to producing quality, wholesome, and safe beef are encouraged to attend to stay up to date on BQA practices,” said Jesse Fulton, director of Nebraska Beef Quality Assurance.

By becoming or maintaining BQA and BQAT certification, producers play a crucial role in promoting a positive story to consumers about the beef industry. This helps build consumer confidence in the practices used to raise and transport cattle.

Many commercial beef packing facilities now require producers selling fed cattle to be BQA certified and transporters delivering cattle to be BQAT certified. Those with questions about how these requirements may impact them are encouraged to contact Nebraska BQA.

The certification is valid for three years, and producers whose certification dates to 2021 or earlier are urged to attend. The certification fee is $20 per person, or a flat fee of $100 for operations registering five or more attendees.

To register, visit bqa.unl.edu or call the Panhandle Research and Extension Center at (308) 632-1230. Be prepared to provide your name, phone number, and email address, as certificates will be issued electronically.
