Rural Prosperity Nebraska has partnered with NU Advance to launch a new online course, “Public Participation and Engagement,” starting February 23. The course aims to help community leaders and professionals develop effective engagement strategies for public decision-making.
“This course doesn’t just give participants knowledge, but it gives them the confidence to plan and implement effective community engagement strategies,” said Marilyn Schlake, course co-teacher and Extension educator.
Running through May 1, the 10-week self-paced course includes interactive modules, homework assessments, discussion boards, and optional Zoom sessions with instructors Schlake and Cheryl Burkhart-Kriesel, a Rural Prosperity Nebraska specialist. Participants will receive a microcredential badge and certificate upon completion.
The program is designed for chambers of commerce, tourism and economic development professionals, nonprofit leaders, event organizers, and public service employees. It also benefits elected officials, business leaders, and private-sector professionals involved in community initiatives.
“Successful public participation requires more than good intentions,” said Burkhart-Kriesel. “It demands a well-thought-out approach that considers diverse perspectives and effective communication techniques.”
The course fee is $250, and registration is open until February 21. For more details or to register, visit https://go.unl.edu/ysf0. Participants can also contact Burkhart-Kriesel at cburkhartkriesel1@unl.edu or Schlake at mschlake1@unl.edu.
