Farmers Engage in Nebraska Policy Making

By Scout Nelson

The Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB), representing over 56,000 member families, continues to be a pivotal force in legislative advocacy for Nebraska’s agriculture. As a leader in agricultural policy engagement, NEFB empowers its members to take an active role in shaping policies that affect their livelihood and the rural communities they support.

With the 109th Nebraska Legislature session underway, the importance of grassroots involvement is more pronounced than ever. NEFB has successfully established itself as a key player at both the Nebraska and U.S. Capitols due to its robust member participation in advocacy efforts.

To further this engagement, Jessica Shelburn has been appointed as the new director of grassroots engagement. Her role is crucial in fortifying NEFB’s efforts in the public policy arena, supporting political activities, and expanding the influence of NEFB-PAC.

One effective way for farmers to directly influence legislation is by testifying at legislative hearings. This allows farmers to present personal experiences and insights, making a tangible impact on policy decisions. NEFB assists members in preparing their testimonies to ensure their voices are heard clearly and effectively.

Farmers and ranchers looking to get involved can start by staying updated on legislative proceedings through NEFB’s communications, signing up for text alerts to receive notifications on key legislation, and participating in hearings. NEFB provides necessary tools and training to enhance members' advocacy skills, enabling them to effectively engage with legislative processes.

Additionally, NEFB offers opportunities for direct interaction with lawmakers through scheduled legislative update calls and organized "Day at the Capitol" events. These initiatives allow members to discuss pertinent issues with their state senators and engage with other influential figures, thereby amplifying their impact on legislative outcomes.

Engagement doesn’t stop at individual participation; it extends to influencing broader agricultural policies. By being proactive in the legislative arena, NEFB members ensure that the agricultural community's needs are addressed and that their contributions to Nebraska’s economy are recognized and supported.

This collective effort not only strengthens NEFB’s position as a leading advocate for agriculture but also solidifies the foundation for a thriving agricultural future in Nebraska. Through active participation and continuous engagement, NEFB members are pivotal in driving the policies that safeguard their interests and promote the welfare of the entire agricultural sector.
