USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service has released a bushel basket of numbers on Nebraska agriculture in recent weeks. The figures are a good reminder of the depth of agriculture in the state. A few highlights include:
Feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, held 2.42 million cattle on feed on October 1, down 2 percent from last year. Placements during September totaled 610,000 head, up 3 percent from 2022, and marketings totaled 450,000 head, down 6 percent from last year.
Corn stocks on September 1 totaled 130 million bushels, 9 percent of 2022 production. Of the total, 68.0 million bushels were stored on-farm, and 62.2 million bushels were stored off-farm.
Stored soybeans on September 1 totaled 21.1 million bushels, 8 percent of 2022 production. On-farm stocks were 5.60 million bushels and off-farm stocks were 15.5 million bushels.
Wheat in storage totaled 41.2 million bushels, 111 percent of this year’s production. On-farm stocks were 8.50 million bushels and off-farm stocks were 32.7 million bushels.
