NFU Urges Fair and Full Farm Bill Reform

NFU Urges Fair and Full Farm Bill Reform

By Jamie Martin

The National Farmers Union (NFU) has responded to the Senate’s reconciliation bill with both support and concern.

NFU President Rob Larew emphasized the importance of passing a comprehensive five-year farm bill rather than relying on a partial legislative package.

The reconciliation bill includes beneficial provisions such as stronger farm safety nets, new investments in biofuels, and conservation efforts. It also extends key tax incentives that support rural economies.

However, NFU highlighted troubling aspects—particularly proposed cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid, as well as expanded loopholes in farm program payment limits.

“Family farmers and ranchers still need a comprehensive, five-year farm bill that reflects the full breadth of agriculture—from producers to consumers—and using reconciliation to move a partial package is a missed opportunity,” said Larew.

NFU has voiced strong support for Senator Chuck Grassley’s amendment, which aims to close farm payment loopholes and ensure that support is more effectively targeted toward working family farmers and ranchers. According to NFU, such steps are essential to restore equity and ensure the integrity of agricultural programs.

Larew also reiterated NFU’s belief that farm policy should unify all stakeholders—producers, consumers, and lawmakers alike. The organization urges Congress to prioritize a farm bill that balances economic, nutritional, and environmental needs for all communities.

As discussions continue, NFU calls for renewed efforts to deliver comprehensive legislation that benefits the entire agricultural sector.
