Nebraska Farm Bureau introduces low-cost health plans

Nebraska Farm Bureau introduces low-cost health plans

By Scout Nelson

In a move to reduce health insurance costs for individuals and families across Nebraska, the Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) has introduced the Nebraska Farm Bureau Health Plans. These new health plans are aimed at self-employed individuals, farmers, ranchers, and small business owners who have long been excluded from the discounted rates available under employer-sponsored plans.

“The current health care insurance market discriminates against self-employed individuals and small business owners because they are not eligible for the discounted rates available under employer-sponsored plans.

This includes farmers, ranchers, and nearly all small business owners in the state,” explained Mark McHargue, NEFB president. Starting on October 1, 2024, the Nebraska Farm Bureau will offer a new, exclusive health plan option that promises significantly lower health care costs compared to the federal marketplace options.

This initiative follows the passage of LB 1313 in the most recent legislative session, a bill that enables nonprofit agricultural organizations like Nebraska Farm Bureau to sponsor health benefit plans.

These plans are medically underwritten and individually rated, meaning they can be provided at substantial savings compared to ACA marketplace plans. While these plans are not technically insurance, they offer coverage similar to traditional insurance plans.

“The Nebraska Farm Bureau Health Plans provide coverages and services typically offered under traditional health insurance plans, including office visits, hospitalization, preventive care, emergency room services, and maternity care.

Mental health and substance abuse care will also be covered,” said Kelsey Scheer, assistant director of NEFB Health Plans. The plans will include a nationwide PPO network of providers through United HealthCare Choice Plus, which spans across the state. Various deductible, co-pay, and out-of-pocket options will also be available to suit individual needs.

These new health plans will provide Nebraska’s farmers, ranchers, and small business owners with high-quality, reliable, and affordable health coverage.
