Ohio farms gain USDA energy funding

By Jamie Martin

The USDA is supporting Ohio farmers and small businesses with nearly $1 million in grant funding through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). These grants encourage the adoption of renewable energy systems and energy efficiency measures, ultimately reducing costs and boosting local job creation.

Ohio State Director Jonathan McCracken emphasized, “Lower utility bills mean that recipients can invest these savings back into their businesses, benefitting the workers and the communities they live in.”

The Chef’s Garden in Huron received $781,897 to install a 1-megawatt solar array, saving $127,759 annually and reducing energy consumption by 50%. A&B Porteus in Coshocton gained $44,990 to install a 27.6-kilowatt solar array, offsetting 118% of their energy needs. Fore 1 LLC in Ottawa was awarded $124,692 to install a 67.23-kilowatt solar array, saving $9,337 annually.

REAP, established under the 2008 Farm Bill and expanded through the Inflation Reduction Act, enables rural businesses to implement sustainable energy solutions. These efforts align with the Administration’s Investing in America agenda, fostering economic growth and clean energy adoption.
