Ranchers Explore Profits with Multispecies Grazing Event

Ranchers Explore Profits with Multispecies Grazing Event

By Scout Nelson

Ranchers, land managers, and anyone interested in diversified grazing are invited to a free field day focused on the benefits of multispecies grazing.

The in-person event begins at 9 a.m. MT and highlights how adding different livestock species, such as cattle, sheep, or goats, can improve pasture health, manage woody plants, and boost overall ranch profitability.

The program features live demonstrations where participants can observe cattle, sheep, and goats grazing together. Attendees will hear directly from the hosting producer who has successfully introduced small ruminant grazing into their system.

University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) Extension specialists will share expert advice during a lunch session, focusing on flock health and practical management strategies.

Topics covered throughout the day include forage preferences and how multiple species efficiently use different plants, fencing and infrastructure needs for small ruminants, nutritional considerations, and supplementation requirements.

Presenters will also discuss marketing opportunities and the economic benefits of integrating species, along with important strategies for parasite and predator control to keep flocks healthy and productive.

Participants will have the chance to ask questions, view livestock in action, and learn firsthand how to incorporate multispecies grazing on their own operations. The event aims to show how combining species can create healthier pastures, reduce unwanted plant growth, and increase profits without adding unnecessary costs.

This field day provides valuable insight for anyone looking to diversify grazing systems, improve pasture management, or explore new income opportunities. Registration is free and includes lunch, but organizers request that attendees register in advance to help with planning.
