By Jamie Martin

Mace Thornton, author of "Jawbone Holler," partner at Stratovation Group, focusing on agricultural client services like marketing and strategic communications. Previously, he led teams at American Farm Bureau Federation and United Soybean Board. A Benedictine College alum, Thornton's novel draws from his upbringing in northeast Kansas' Missouri River Hills.

"Jawbone Holler," the first novel from seasoned agricultural communicator Mace Thornton, offers a gripping look at the life of pioneers during America's pre-Civil War era. Set on the Missouri-Kansas border, this historical fiction draws readers into the challenging world of Perry Adams, a young man with dreams of establishing a corn farm.

Thornton's narrative begins with Perry at his lowest in Indiana, compelled to venture into the promising yet perilous Kansas Territory. His journey is marked by personal and external conflicts, as he navigates through relationships with diverse characters like a local constable, freedmen farmers, and a schoolteacher who doubles as a pianist.

The novel's backdrop of strife between Missouri and Kansas adds a layer of intensity to Perry's adventures, illustrating his struggle for life, love, and liberty amidst historical turmoil. Thornton's detailed research and vivid storytelling bring this turbulent period to life, making the historical experiences resonate with today's readers.

Through Perry's interactions and evolving relationships, "Jawbone Holler" explores themes of resilience and self-discovery. As Perry confronts his demons and forges connections in a hostile environment, he also encounters love, which becomes intertwined with his broader struggles for survival.

Mace Thornton, a native of Troy, Kansas, enriches the plot with authentic settings and historical details, ensuring a compelling read from start to finish. "Jawbone Holler" is not just a tale of survival; it's a journey through the heart of American history, filled with the spirit of adventure and the quest for a better life.
