As agricultural events like county fairs and rodeos gain popularity, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) emphasizes the importance of biosecurity to protect livestock participating in these events. State Veterinarian Roger Dudley highlights how diseases can spread in settings where animals and equipment are shared.
Before the Show -
- Ensure animals are healthy before attending. Any sick animal should be kept home.
- Thoroughly clean and disinfect all show equipment and trailers.
During the Show -
- Keep a close eye on animals for any signs of heat stress or illness.
- Avoid sharing equipment with other exhibitors.
- Prevent your animals from drinking directly from community hoses.
After the Show -
- Isolate returning animals from others on your farm to monitor for signs of illness.
- Consult a veterinarian if any health issues arise.
- Use dedicated supplies for isolated animals and thoroughly clean and disinfect all used items.
The NDA also advises on the importance of understanding state import restrictions for livestock, especially from states with known disease outbreaks. Livestock owners planning to transport animals across state lines should check the destination state’s import requirements.
For concerns about livestock diseases, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture encourages prompt communication with their office or a veterinary professional. Implementing these biosecurity measures can significantly reduce the risk of disease spread and maintain the health of Nebraska's livestock industry.
