Nebraska farmers had 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending May 19, 2024, as reported by the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Moisture levels varied, with topsoil moisture at 77% adequate and subsoil moisture at 71% adequate, supporting ongoing field activities.
Crop Planting and Emergence:
- Corn: Planted area reached 79%, slightly behind the previous year's 84% and the five-year average of 82%. The turnover stood at 38%, trailing behind last year's 52%.
- Soybeans: 60% of soybeans were planted, lagging last year's 74% and the average of 66%. Only 21% of soybeans have emerged, compared to 37% last year.
- Winter Wheat: Shows a healthier outlook with 63% rated as good and 13% excellent. The wheat has also begun to head at 22%, which is ahead of last year’s progress.
Other Crops:
- Sorghum and Oats planting, and emergence also reflected variable progress, with oats notably reaching 97% planted, aligning with last year's figures.
Pasture and Range Conditions:
- Conditions for pasture and range are predominantly in good shape, rated 48% good and 8% excellent, providing a stable environment for grazing.
- As the season progresses, monitoring these trends will be crucial for predicting yield outcomes and managing crop health effectively.
