At Fonner Park in Grand Island, the Nebraska State Fair is in full swing, continuing until September 2nd, celebrating agriculture at its core. The fair features a variety of activities that spotlight Nebraska's agricultural prowess, including the Raising Nebraska interactive experience where visitors can deepen their understanding of agriculture and natural resources.
During the fair, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) is actively participating to ensure visitors have a memorable and educational experience. Their involvement includes hosting Nebraska’s Largest Classroom events at the Raising Nebraska building, where attendees can learn fascinating facts about Nebraska agriculture and the importance of food safety through proper handwashing techniques demonstrated by the NDA’s Food Safety staff.
The NDA also provides support at the birthing pavilion, where veterinarians and staff educate the public on livestock care and biosecurity measures crucial for preventing animal diseases. Additionally, NDA staff from the Noxious Weeds program and Animal and Plant Health departments are available to discuss various agricultural topics and provide valuable program information.
Youth involvement is significant at the fair, with organizations like 4-H and FFA playing essential roles. These groups ensure the next generation of farmers and agricultural leaders are well-represented and actively participating. Highlights include the Poultry Photography contest, where NDA will honor young participants and feature winning photos in a 2025 calendar, coupled with biosecurity tips to promote healthy poultry flocks.
With a range of livestock competitions, displays of top-notch produce, and baked goods contests, the fair not only showcases the quality and diversity of Nebraska agriculture but also educates the public about the vital role agriculture plays in feeding the nation. As you enjoy the myriad activities at the State Fair, take the opportunity to experience and appreciate the best of Nebraska agriculture, underlining its significance to daily life and the local economy.
