In the week ending November 5, 2023, Nebraska faced several challenges in its agricultural sector, as detailed in the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service report. Here are the key highlights:

Weather and Fieldwork:

  • The week provided only 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork, limiting the time available for agricultural activities.

Moisture Levels:

  • Topsoil moisture supplies were rated at 21% very short, 29% short, 48% adequate, and 2% surplus.
  • Subsoil moisture supplies were reported as 26% very short, 37% short, 33% adequate, and 4% surplus.

Crop Progress:

  • Corn harvest was at 84%, lagging behind the previous year's 89% but slightly ahead of the five-year average of 78%.
  • Soybean harvest reached 95%, slightly behind the previous year's 100% but in line with the 96% five-year average.
  • Winter wheat showed a range of conditions, with 3% rated very poor, 12% poor, 35% fair, 39% good, and 11% excellent.
  • Sorghum harvest was at 82%, close to last year's 85% and the 79% five-year average.

Pasture and Range Conditions:

  • Pasture and range conditions were mixed, with 6% rated very poor, 11% poor, 27% fair, 39% good, and 17% excellent.
